My Statement about Social Media
October 11th, 2020
After some careful consideration, I have decided for the time being (and foreseeable future) to stop using and posting on all of my social media accounts for Garrett’s Granola. I believe in living an extraordinary and examined life, while holding my values of community, kindness, curiosity, authenticity, and connection as the most important things I have to offer. Intentional or not, the impact of social media has caused disconnection, addiction, confusion, and unrealistic expectations… especially for our young people.
I’m not alone in my hypocrisy, often complaining of fake news, click bait, and the addictive nature of these platforms while still using them myself. So it’s time to take a step back, and do the right thing for the future of our democracy, and the mental health of everyone.
It’s also time to help promote honest conversation, healthful habits, and hope for a more thoughtful, enlightened world. Making a commitment to mindfulness meditation, a better relationship to nature, and giving back to our communities whenever possible is always a good thing.
So for the next month, I will be donating a percentage of every sale of granola to Reboot & Recover, an organization that treats and educates people with internet-related addictions.
I also would recommend downloading a meditation app, in order to set aside some time each day to explore your own mind. For this I always recommend Waking Up, the meditation app designed by neuroscientist and philosopher Sam Harris.
Although I’ve considered this for months, part of this decision to step back from social media was also encouraged by my viewing of The Social Dilemma documentary. I highly recommend you take the time to watch this movie, and then follow up by visiting their website thesocialdilemma.com to find resources and start conversations about the mental health of our world.
We can do better! And I really hope we do.
Thank you so much for your continued support of my small business, I truly appreciate it.
Take good care,
Garrett
